Souties trump Boertjies in golf battle

As usual, there was a great atmosphere at the event.

THE Souties avoided a losing trend to ‘gun down’ the Boertjies at the ever-popular annual `Souties versus Boertjies’ clash played at Margate Country Club last Saturday.

Each year the Anglo-Boer War is fought on the South Coast, but instead of guns the `warriors’ swing golf clubs. Players with a British heritage wear the red, white or blue while their boertjie opponents are decked out in khaki.

A boertjie with a very English sounding name, Pops Harrison, and Joan Minnaar, were voted the best dressed Boertjies while Maureen Ogilvie and John Webster claimed the Brit crown.

The clash still rates as one of the best fun events on the local golfing calendar.
