Brave efforts thwart armed hijackers

In one case, the hijackers shot at the recovery team.

Those who track and recover hijacked vehicles often put their life on the line in carrying out these duties.

Hendrik Ludick of Airtrack X-Treme Security said his team responded to the hijacking of a Toyota Hilux in the Hibberdene area last Saturday at 20:40.

Ludick said the hijackers consisted of three men armed with handguns.

The vehicle’s tracking unit led them to the Hklokozi area near Umzumbe. Members of the Port Shepstone Saps K9 Unit also responded to assist.

The vehicle was intercepted, and a chase ensued. Shots were fired at the recovery team. The driver of the hijacked vehicle lost control and crashed down an embankment.

“We managed to arrest a person. Once again, it was great teamwork between Saps K9 and our recovery team,” said Ludick.

Earlier that same day, Airtrack X-Treme Security was notified that three armed men had hijacked a Renault in the Turton area.

“The vehicle was successfully recovered after it was intercepted. The men fled on foot,” said Ludick.

On October 1, Airtrack X-Treme Security was notified of a hijacked Toyota Hilux in Mtwalume.

“The vehicle was hijacked by three men. Two were armed with handguns and one with a knife. The vehicle was successfully recovered after being abandoned in the bush,” said Ludick.
