Indigenous games wrap up

Team eThekwini maintained its status as the KZN Provincial Indigenous Games champions at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

The KZN MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, said he was impressed with the direction the KZN Indigenous Games are headed.

These provincial games were held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre and Margate Sports School last week.

Team eThekwini maintained its status as the champions. The metro won by a big margin in the two-day competition.

They amassed 26 points overall, with King Cetshwayo coming second with 11 points and Umkhanyakude in third place with six points.

Games played during the competition included Khokho, Induku, Igqathu, Amagenda, Imlabalana, Drie Stokkies, Dibeke, Incuva and Jukskei.

South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) manager of finance and human resources Deborah Ludick said they were thrilled to host the provincial indigenous games.

People of all ages took part.

Ludick said the event not only highlights the country’s rich cultural diversity but also brings significant benefits to the local economy.

“This event aligned perfectly with our goal of promoting cultural heritage while supporting the local tourism industry. The Indigenous Games provide a unique opportunity for locals and visitors to engage with South Africa’s heritage, promoting social cohesion while celebrating the sporting skills passed down through centuries. The South Coast, with its blend of natural beauty, cultural diversity and modern amenities, is the perfect backdrop for this important event,” she said.
