Newcomer award for Maskandi artist

Thobani Khathi says he wants to work with organisations that will help him grow as a musician.

Upcoming Maskandi artist Thobani Khathi recently bagged an award at the KZN Namhla Artists Awards held in Durban.

Khathi, well-known as Skhiye seVenture, won the Best Maskandi Newcomer award.

He explained that this was the first time he was recognised as an artist since he started making Maskandi music in 2021.

“My love for this type of music started when I was very young. I looked up to Maskandi artists such as iNgonyama Yehlathi Xhakaza. I also became a dancer when Maskandi artists performed,” he said.

Originally from Kranskop, Khathi now lives in Harding.

“I live in the Ugu District because of work. This region has become my home; I have found my brothers in Maskandi here, such as MaTollgate and Ezendlamhlathi,” he said.

He added that bagging the award has given him a sense of reassurance.

He said he was happy and grateful to people like Baba uJerico Mhlongo, who has always inspired him to give his best in everything he does.

The award-winning Maskandi artist said his goal is to work for an organisation such as KZN Namhla Artists so that he can get a platform to work more on his craft.

“I hope the organisers of the awards also give me a chance to work with them and to learn a few things so that I can grow as an artist,” he said.
