VOX POP: What does Heritage Day mean to you?

This is what South Coasters had to say...

Heritage Day was observed on Tuesday this week, and the Fever asked South Coasters what the day means to them. This is what they had to say:

Taryn Ogle from Albersville:

“Heritage has different meanings for each of us. To me, it simply means everything. It is who we are, what our values are, our cultural background, families, traditions and manners. We all take something from the generation before and hand it over to the generation after us, which is unique to every individual and is intangible. We hold our heritage within ourselves, building a sense of belonging and care. Our heritage is always growing and is something we can build on.”

Asanda Ndzinya:

“Heritage Day means a lot to me because I get to be reminded of where I come from and who I am. I get to be reminded that there are other cultures in the country that we need to acknowledge and respect. I believe that it is important to celebrate Heritage Day because we end up forgetting our cultural practices, and some end up dating people they are related to because they do not know their heritage. I unfortunately could not celebrate this day because I was working.”

Sifiso Xolo:

“Heritage Day will never not be Shaka Day to me. It is a day we celebrate the life of our late monarch, uShaka kaSenzangakhona, who played an important role in uniting the Nguni clans into a cohesive Zulu nation. I am a proud Zulu person today because of the late monarch. I do not go all out to celebrate this day, but I take some time to reflect on who I am as a person in the Xolo clan. I take time to appreciate everything that has culturally and traditionally made me the person I am today.”
