All systems go for Indigenous Games

The games will be split between the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre and the Margate Sports School.

The KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture said it’s all systems go for the KZN Indigenous Games at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre today (27th) and Saturday (28th).

Held in collaboration with the KZN Indigenous Games Council, the games are set to add to the festivities commemorating Heritage Month.

Games include Amagenda, Dibeke, Drie stokkies, Incuva, Induku, Ingqathu (rope skipping), Khokho, Juskei and Umlabalaba.

They will be split between the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre and the Margate Sports School on both days.

According to the organisers, the Indigenous Games have been gaining popularity after a government campaign to bring them to the fore began in the last decade.

“The highly anticipated festival will not only showcase immense talent that has positioned KZN as a dominant force in these traditional games but will also celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the province. This year’s event introduces the exciting All-Africa initiative. It broadens the scope of the games and celebrates the province’s dominance in the space for the last ten years in a row,” they said.

They added that Ray Nkonyeni and Ugu District municipalities are key partners in the games.

The first day of the games kick-off at noon, with the official opening ceremony at 17:00. The second day starts at 09:00 and ends with a medal ceremony in the afternoon.
