Prizes up for grab at fishing competition

Designated fishing areas are Sandspit and Port Shepstone to Orange Rocks in Uvongo.

For the past few weeks, fishing has been rather bad, with not much game fish being caught.

However, there were reports of anglers reeling in bream along most coastal fishing spots.

Also, anglers had good shad catches at Sea Park last week. Fishing at The Block has been slow for many months, and Clive Peverett was lucky to catch a shad recently.

Well, at the end of this month, shad season will close.

The South African Association for Marine Biological Research (Saambr) said it’s important to protect the bigger ‘blue shad’ at the peak of their spawning season from October to November. This allows these fish the opportunity to spawn and thus ensure the next generation of shad.

However, the lack of effective law enforcement during the closed season, in particular, has resulted in the excessive fishing of these important breeding fish.
