New CEO for regional hospital

Zakanzima Mbethe brings a wealth of experience from his previous role managing a regional hospital in the Eastern Cape.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Zakanzima Mbethe as the new CEO.

Mbethe, from Margate, brings a wealth of experience from his previous role managing a regional hospital in the Eastern Cape.

The hospital’s PRO, Phumza Morai, said that the appointment comes after a period of dedicated interim leadership by Gabriel Khawula, who has been overseeing both Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and Prince Mshiyeni Hospital since February 2023.

“The Department of Health has recognised Mbethe’s extensive expertise and decided to deploy him to Port Shepstone, aligning his skills with the needs of the hospital. In an extended management meeting held recently, the chief director, Thamela Dube, expressed gratitude to the staff for their continued hard work despite challenging financial conditions.”

She said that the chief director also acknowledged Khawula’s contribution, thanking him for his commitment and for managing two hospitals.

The hospital’s senior manager for medical services, Dr Babusisiwe Dlamini, who represented the hospital’s senior management, welcomed Mbethe. She emphasised the importance of teamwork and open communication.

Also, Mbethe expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and shared his excitement about joining the team. He emphasised his commitment to an open-door policy and collaborative management style, aiming to steer the hospital towards continued success and improvement.

The district director, Linda Dlamini, expressed optimism about Mbethe’s transition from managing another regional hospital in the Eastern Cape to overseeing Port Shepstone Regional, knowing that it caters for the entire Ugu district. She acknowledged the challenges ahead, however, thanked Mbethe for accepting this critical role.

Morai added that the staff and management look forward to working closely with Mbethe as he takes on this new challenge.

“His leadership is expected to guide the hospital through its current challenges while continuing to provide excellent care to the community.”
