Capoeira Academy flies high

It is a great way for people of all ages to learn self-defence and safely build strength and agility.

It’s been a season of achievements for the Capoeira Academy, a martial arts school on the South Coast.

The group performed at the Andhra Sabha fundraising tea party last Saturday. From gripping self-defence demonstrations to synchronised Capoeira sequences and impressive kicks and acrobatics, they had the audience at the edge of their seats.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines movement and acrobatics with skilful fighting techniques.

It is a great way for people of all ages to learn self-defence and safely build strength and agility. Also, part of its appeal is that it is accompanied by its own vibrant, ethnic sound and traditional Portuguese songs.

The senior students who completed their grading also received new belts after months of hard work.

The Capoeira Academy has been leaving a trailblazing impact throughout the South Coast, doing demonstrations at various schools and events such as the Mardi Gras and Port Shepstone Lions’ Market to introduce people to this unique martial art.

They also run an outreach project at St Martin De Porres School. Capoeira is already popular in other parts of KZN and globally, but this is a first for the South Coast.

“Not many people know about Capoeira here, but we are changing that. With the beach as the background and the talented youth, it’s the perfect place to get a Capoeira community going. It’s all about creating a positive vibe while learning self-defence and training the body to do phenomenal things. I hope more people will come and try it out,” said coach Shane Conning.
