RNM celebrates women in KwaNzimakwe

The mayor said that a lot of terrible things are happening in communities which are moving them backwards.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality hosted a Women’s Day event in Braemer Community Hall, KwaNzimakwe last Wednesday.

The mayor, Zodwa Mzindle, gave a message of support to the large gathering.

The event was marked under the theme ‘Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development’.

The month of August is said to be one of the most important months of the year because of what women achieved in 1956.

Mzindle gave a brief background of how the August 9 public holiday came about and said it was important that she highlighted the history of South African women.

On this day, a large group of women began a campaign to bring an end to the pass laws enforced by the government of the time.

“Today, I encourage all women to look up to the women of 1956. Let us walk in their footsteps and fight. We must fight for the development of women, fight for our safety and fight for non-discriminatory treatment.”

The mayor said that a lot of terrible things are happening in communities which are moving them backwards.

She said only women can fight these ills and make a change.

Mzindle said it’s time to stop competing with each other and to start uplifting each other.

“Let’s help each other, let’s encourage each other and shine, and stop putting men first. Let us protect each other as women and protect our children; we will not only be doing it for us but for the whole nation.”

In celebration of the event, the women dressed up in a pinafore and a doek as the attire of the day.
