New NPO in Umzumbe tackles crime and abuse

A new organisation to fight crime and help prevent women and child abuse has been formed in Mtwalume under Umzumbe Local Municipality.

Women of Umzumbe (WoU) was launched last Friday.

Some of the members who have joined previously worked with Woman of Mtwalume (WoM).

According to a source, the reason some of the members left WoM is due to differences of opinion with the chairperson, Nombuso Sibisi.

The Herald contacted Sibisi, however, she did not want to comment but said that WoM is still working for the community.

The chairperson of WoU, Bongekile Sithole, was previously the deputy chairperson of WoM.

Sithole said that their working relationship was no longer healthy, and they decided to form a new organisation.

Furthermore, WoU will help not only the people of Mtwalume but also Umzumbe as a whole.

“This organisation will be helping other wards in Umzumbe as well, and not just Mtwalume. Sibisi is still my sister; whatever help she needs, she will still receive it, but we thought it’s better that we start a new organisation.”

Meanwhile, the six-year-old girl who was assaulted by a 17-year-old boy in Makhoso area was honoured for her bravery.

The local Department of Social Development and ward councillor Bernard Tryon hosted an event to honour the girl and to thank God that she survived the incident.

Members of the community, her parents, pastors, WoU and the media were part of this event.

Tryon said that it was important for them to show the girl that she was brave.
