‘Gym bunnies’ burn calories

The participants ignored the scorching sun and did everything coach Nkululeko 'king of squats' Dlamini instructed them to do.

Women from around the South Coast braved the heat to enjoy a morning workout session with celebrity coach Nkululeko Zane Dlamini last Friday.

The workout session organised by Ugu Broadcasting Services (UBS) was a celebration of Women’s Day. It was also a build-up to the upcoming Ugu Maskandi Festival.

The session was held at the Chris Hani Square in Port Shepstone and was free to the public.

During the workout, ‘gym bunnies’ ignored the scorching sun and followed Dlamini’s instructions.

Well-known as the king of squats, Dlamini became popular after his workout sessions flaunting his toned thighs and glutes went viral on social media.

His squat routine, paired with maskandi music, grabbed the attention of all.

Thandeka Chiliza, who attended, said it was a great way to start Women’s Day and a public holiday.

“I follow the king of squats on TikTok, and I had been dying to meet him since I workout a lot. Although the sun did not show us any mercy, the session was worth getting sunburnt for,” said Chiliza.

Meanwhile, the director of UBS, Siyabonga Mkhungo, said it was an appropriate way to celebrate Women’s Month in style, saying that they encourage people, especially women, to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Mkhungo said the Department of Health always encourages people to exercise in the little time they have to keep themselves fit and healthy.

“Through this event, we also wanted to thank the community for their continued support when it comes to the Ugu Maskandi Festival set to take place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on September 28,” he said.
