Celebrating Mandela through reviving schools

For 67 minutes of Mandela Day, pencil cases, masks, soccer balls, paint, wheelbarrows, hoes, rakes, spades and seeds were handed over to the school.

In celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela, Ugu District Operations Sukumasakhe took to Madakana Primary School in Murchison to revive the school’s garden and paint.

Under Ugu’s Sukumasakhe chairperson, Thobile Khuzwayo, government departments, non-profit organisations, school governing bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders were invited.

For 67 minutes of Mandela Day, pencil cases, masks, soccer balls, paint, wheelbarrows, hoes, rakes, spades and seeds were handed over to the school.

Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) regional communication coordinator Khanyiso Seyisi said there were other Mandela Day activities happening within the Ugu district.

“Umuziwabantu Municipality visited and handed over gifts at Sikhosana Household in the Xambu area under Ward 2. Umzumbe Municipality and Mfundo Arnold Community Health Centre handed over building materials at Indluyokuphepha in Mthwalume. The handover was also for a house in Nyavini (Ward 7) and Ward 12,” said Seyisi.

He added that Umdoni Municipality embarked on a cleanup and a handover at Bringing Hope Day Care and Phakamani Creche.

“This year’s Mandela Month was commemorated under the theme ‘It is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequality’,” he said.
