The bursary package is valued at R200 000 covering tuition fees valued at R 176 000, a sewing machine (R 14 000), and a laptop courtesy costing R15 000.

Are you interested in studying fashion design, but you don’t have the funds? Celebrated fashion luminary Gert-Johan Coetzee has a solution for you.

Coetzee recently announced the continuation of his esteemed Fashion Design Bursary, saying that applications are open and will close on September 10.

Established in 2009 and hosted annually at the North-West School of Design, the bursary is for one deserving individual to embark on a comprehensive three-year fashion journey at Gert-Johan Coetzee’s alma mater.

Coetzee said the bursary package is valued at R200 000, covering tuition fees valued at R 176 000, a sewing machine (R 14 000), and a laptop courtesy costing R15 000.

He said the winner will also be required to complete two internships per year at Gert-Johan Coetzee studios.

“Throughout my career, I have been privileged to receive all the opportunities I have, and I see it as a responsibility to honour this and to be able to pass down the mantle; it evokes wonderful memories of seeing these eager, young, talented individuals arrive at my studio for mentorship and seeing them go on to become a success story,” he said.

He added that Junior Skhosana (2023), Basetsana Maloleka (2022), and Marumo Malepe (2021) are currently at the academy, enhancing their skills to make their mark in the industry.

“Complete the online application form and submit it (www.nwsd.co.za). Upload a video of yourself dressed in your favourite style and describe your style. Include who you are and where you are from. Also, brief us on where you got your clothes from. The video must not be longer than one minute. Upload all this on your social media, Tik-tok and Instagram using hashtags: #nwsd, #gert, #gertbursary2024, #fashiondesign, #fashionbursary, #fashionschool and tag @nwsdfashion and @gertjohancoetzee,” he said.

Coetzee said the applicants should be South African citizens aged 18 and older.

He said applicants must have a matric certificate, adding that the recipient must be able to commence their studies in January 2025.

He added that personal stationery, accommodation and meals are excluded from the bursary.
