Holidaymaker caught in rip current off Shelly Beach

NSRI Shelly Beach and Mi7 responded to the call for help.

Three bystanders jumped in and saved a holidaymaker who got into trouble while swimming off Shelly Beach on July 11 at about 16:50.

Gavin Black from Mi7 Ambulance said paramedics responded to an emergency call, together with members from NSRI Shelly Beach.

Black said a 62-year-old woman visiting from Pretoria was swimming at an unprotected beach off Shelly Beach when she got into difficulty.

“The bather got caught in a riptide and was rescued by three bystanders,” he said.

“Medics from NSRI and Mi7 stabilised the woman on the beach and treated her for hypothermia and shock. She was then transported to hospital,” he said.
