Virtual reality check for learners

The Innovation Hub is an educational programme that introduces essential educational guides and services to learners, saying that these guides are powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Learners of Beaular Primary in Oshabeni recently enjoyed a mini digital career expo hosted by the Digital Economy Innovation Hub.

Organised by Sinegugu and Yamandosi Cele, the expo showcased various career options through Virtual Reality (VR).

According to the duo who founded the innovation hub, in a rapidly evolving world of technology, access to digital resources and innovation is more crucial than ever.

They said the innovation hub is an educational programme that introduces essential educational guides and services to learners, saying that these guides are powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

“This initiative was possible through our partnerships with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA). Our mission is to empower learners, particularly in rural areas, to dream beyond their current circumstances and envision a future filled with possibilities. During our visit to Beaular Primary, learners were provided with a glimpse into the future by allowing them to experience different educational content through VR glasses. Seeing the excitement and wonder in their eyes as they engaged with technology they had never encountered before was amazing,” they said.

They added that the experience allowed learners to visualise themselves in roles they might not have considered possible, such as doctors, engineers and scientists.

The pair added: “By seeing these possibilities with their eyes, we hope to inspire them to reach for their dreams. We are also excited to collaborate with Zwelihle Maloka, the founder of Enriching Minds from Oshabeni. This partnership is a key component of our programme as it ensures learners have access to quality educational resources and support. Our goal is to make technology accessible throughout our town. By introducing learners to advanced technologies and innovative learning methods, we aim to equip them with the skills and mindsets needed to thrive in the digital age.”

Meanwhile, the principal, Dumisani Msomi, said he believed that learners from rural areas greatly benefit from such initiatives, as they provide inspiration and a sense of possibility.

“These children need to see what they can become. This educational programme is crucial in helping them believe in their potential,” he said.
