Little silver fish arrive on the South Coast

The little silver fish were spotted at St Mikes, Port Shepstone and surrounding beaches over the past several days.

Sardines were welcomed with nets, buckets and crates at the much-anticipated Sardine Run, which arrived on the South Coast last weekend.

The little silver fish were spotted at St Mike’s, Port Shepstone and surrounding beaches.

Some could not wait to taste the little silver fish.

The world-renowned run arrived during the Ocean Festival that took place in Scottburgh.

The festival commemorated World Oceans Day (June 8) while encouraging ocean conservation through its themes ‘engagement, education and economics’.

The event programme, which ran from June 6 to 9, provided all ages and interests with a variety of ways to celebrate the ocean in commemoration of World Ocean Day.

Several people left with fish during the run.

Ocean Festival founder Russel Symcox said: “We were delighted with the arrival of the Sardine Run, an important ocean event that signifies the need for what we’re doing to conserve the ocean and its inhabitants. The ocean is alive, and we were fortunate to have some fantastic marine wildlife encounters at the weekend as we worked towards conserving this space.”

Symcox said they are grateful for all the support, with the beach clean-up removing 350kg of litter from Scottburgh beaches.

Families bonded over the sardine run.

“We all need to pull together for collective change and create engaging events that educate and boost the global economy through conservation efforts. We’re very proud of our international partners in Iceland, England, Portugal, the UAE, and Malaysia, who also adopted the Ocean Festival, and look forward to next year’s event from June 6 to 8.,” he said.

Excitement was the theme of the weekend after the sardines arrived.
