Sheppie court sentences rapist to life in prison

Parents, caregivers and teachers must be aware of certain signs that may indicate a child might be a victim of abuse.

Mhlengi Perfect Ngcobo’s name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Ngcobo (35) was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on May 20. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

He raped a girl (13) twice at Msinsini near Umzumbe in 2021.

A family member caught Ngcobo in the act and immediately reported it to the police.

The Saps communication office for the Ugu District said that very often crimes against children are not reported because of the closeness of a family, ignorance of children regarding their rights, fear of the perpetrator, outcome of the case, either removal of the breadwinner or the children, fear of guilt or shame.

Parents, caregivers and teachers must be aware of certain signs that may indicate a child might be a victim of abuse. These signs are a change in behaviour or physical appearance, relationship problems with friends, unusual interest in sex, unusually sensitive and cries a lot, or the child may withdraw from all activities.

Contact the police if you know of a child who may be abused.

The policing of crimes affecting women and children is of paramount importance to the Saps, and together with the Department of Justice, it will ensure the maximum punishment for offenders.
