Thrilling start to PowerWise Cup

Matches were played in the true spirit of the game.

The Green Mambas saw off the Sheppie Challengers in the opening round of the CMCA PowerWise Cup at Scottburgh Country Club last Saturday.
Mambas batted first and made 172-9 in the allotted 20 overs.

Blake Vincent top-scored with 33, with support from Deshan Pillay (16), Rorke Harris (10), Shivesh Moodley (10) and Ryan Mansoor (10).

They were helped by Extras, with the Challengers leaking 81.

(Keep in mind, wides and no-balls counted for two runs and 8-ball overs were used where necessary).

For the Challengers, Benjamin Kunz and Matt Graham-Jolly picked up two wickets apiece.

Those who took one wicket were Loyiso Ndamase, Ruben van Reenen, Damion Bezuidenhout and Elijah Langton. There was also a runout.

In response, the Challengers could only manage 145-3 in the 20 overs.

Opener Elijah and made 15, with his partner Bertu carrying his bat for 30 not out.

Ruben unleashing three sixes and five fours for his 50, then having to retire.

Damian Skinner was out for a duck (caught) as was Orlando Lombard (run out).

Fabian Francis and Kirayen Harakraj were the bowlers to pick up wickets, with Rorke exacting a runout.

In the end, Mambas won by 27 runs.

* The second game saw Jaguars take on Scottburgh High Rockets, with the game ending in a thrilling tie.

Jaguars posted 118 runs in 20 overs, thanks to notable contributions from Veronique du Plooy (36), Cade Canham (23), Deshan Pillay (16) and Advay Jeewan (10).

For the Rockets, Shivesh Moodley took 3-5 in three overs.

Others to strike with one wicket each were Kaiyur Naidoo, Milan Thevan and Blake Vincent.

When the Rockets came in to bat, they struggled to cope with the guile of Deshan’s leg spin and Cade’s accurate bowling, with the duo sharing five wickets between them.

Shivesh Moodley and Seth du Plessis offered some resistance, with 12 runs each.

Others to take a wicket were Yajna Singh, Advay Jeewan and Neil Bezuidenhout.

Extras came to the Rockets aid in big way, totalling 72.

PowerWise CEO Bevesh Jewaan expressed his continued support for initiatives that foster sporting growth among youngsters.

Organiser Clinton Moodley was delighted that the opening round had delivered on its promise of exciting cricket action.

Jaguars and Scottburgh High Rockets all smiles after their game ended in a tie.
