Bheki Cele opens Gamalakhe police station

This building was completed in 2018 and has been operational since then.

The chairperson of the Gamalakhe Forum, Gabisani Cele, said the official opening of the Gamalakhe police station was long overdue.

He said crime in Gamalakhe was high, and the forum had taken a stand to fight against it.

Cele shared his thoughts on Tuesday last week after the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, officially opened the station.

“We don’t sleep day and night fighting for our community, and we are glad that the minister finally came to open the station.”

“One of the challenges we are facing is that we bring the criminals to the police, but the police turn around and advise them to open cases against us. As a chairperson of the forum, I am attending a case because some of these ‘paras’ have opened cases.”

Cele said the forum members are disappointed that they did not get a chance to engage with the minister because they had a few issues to discuss with him.

He said Gamalakhe police station has some corrupt police officers, and if they are not moved, they will take action.

The building (police station) was completed in 2018 and has been operational, however, Minister Cele said the reason it was only officially opened now was its operational level had to be changed from being run by a captain to a lieutenant colonel.

“Now this means more resources will be given to this station.”

He also said the police station did not operate on a 24-hour basis previously because during patrol rounds, sometimes no officer was available to remain in the office.

“Now more officers will be assigned from the college, it will operate 24 hours, and more police vehicles will be allocated.”

He said the crime stats at Gamalakhe were not as bad as other areas, but it needs to do better.

“With the new operational level, we are hoping that it will be easier for the community to get help whenever they need it.”
