‘Government still has work to do’

KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said although the government still has a lot of work to do, it has come a long way after the apartheid regime.

The biggest issue the government is struggling to resolve is the unemployment rate. This was revealed by KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube during a Freedom Day celebration at the TB Molefe Stadium in Gamalakhe last Saturday.

Freedom Day is observed annually on April 27 and commemorates the first democratic elections held on that day in 1994.

Dube-Ncube said although the government still has a lot of work to do, it has come a long way after the apartheid regime.

“When the democratic government took over the oppressors who deprived black people of water, electricity, good roads and more, they had to start giving people the things they did not have and other infrastructure. One of the biggest issues we are facing currently is job creation. But we are happy as a government since we started our Sthesha Waya Waya programme last year, more than 600 000 people have been employed,” she said.

The Premier added that President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced that KZN was the leading province in hiring young people in the Expanded Public Works Programme, where more than a million people were employed.

Meanwhile, Dube-Ncube kicked off celebrations with fervent activations and a colourful cultural parade in Gamalakhe.

A highlight of the day was the participation of Team KZN, the champions of the 2024 National Golden Games, adding an extra layer of excitement and unity to the festivities.

Dube-Ncube said the event also served as a platform to address the province’s readiness for the upcoming general elections, saying that the government is dedicated to ensuring free and fair elections.
