Samke is a winner

Fever Local News | Samkelisiwe Shezi won prestigious awards from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

The Ugu Club development programme coordinator, Samkelisiwe Shezi, is a top employee of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Born and raised in Murchison, near Port Shepstone, Samke, as she is known, recently scooped prestigious awards at a ceremony organised by the department which was held in Durban central.

She entered two categories and won both – Best Public Service Implemented Programme/Project of the Year and Best Public Servant of the Year. For her sterling efforts, Samke won trophies and a certificate.

Although it was not easy, she is grateful for the recognition. The department organised the awards to encourage its employees to continue practising Batho Pele principles.

“When I was announced as a winner, I was a bit surprised and nervous. I was competing with representatives from 11 districts of the province. It was more tough, as I was also competing against some colleagues in senior positions,” she said.

She cited understating the community she serves working in her favour. The programme she oversees involves children and the elderly, and she had to go the extra mile to ensure she served all of them accordingly.

“With limited resources, I ensured I reached every corner of the district, no matter the circumstances. I had to understand the community and serve them according to Batho Pele principles. Last year, I worked with 27 leagues, each with about 10 clubs and with 18 players per club,” she said.
