Community unites to buy Sibusiso a bicycle

Jan Haywood told Fever that he had seen Ntuzela walk to work whether it was raining or sunny, and it motivated him to do something about it.

Gamalakhe resident Sibusiso Cedric Ntuzela was at a loss for words after he was recently given a bicycle by Good Samaritan Jan Haywood and his wife, Pat.

Haywood and his wife took to social media to ask for donations to buy Ntuzela a bicycle, after seeing him walk to and from work almost everyday.

After the plea, the public rallied behind the couple to buy one.
Haywood told Fever that he had been seeing Ntuzela walk to work whether it was raining or sunny, and it motivated him to do something about it.

Ntuzela (37) is from the Sgedleni area in Gamalakhe and works in Ramsgate.
Haywood said he got to know about Ntuzela’s need for a bicycle while dropping him off in Gamalakhe one evening.

“The first time I saw him was a year or two ago. He walked on the same road everyday. Sometimes, if he is walking where I am headed, I offer him a lift. One day when I was dropping him off near his home, we got talking and I found out how he wanted to save for a bicycle, but he couldn’t. When I got home I told my wife that I couldn’t get Cedric’s situation out of my head and that I wanted to try and do something about it,” he said.

Spreading kindness in the month of love are Jan and Pat Haywood.

He added that Pat took to social media to ask for assistance. Initially, two people offered bicycles but they could not take them as they had been standing for a long time.

Haywood said: “I told my wife to see how many promises we could get for the bicycle before taking money from people. After donations came in, I went to Southcoast Mall and bought a bicycle. I went to his workplace in Ramsgate to hand it over.”

He added that he and his wife did not do this for fame, but because they care.
He emphasised that the donation would have been impossible if it was not for the community at large.
Meanwhile, Ntuzela said he does not have enough words to express his gratitude toward Haywood and his wife.

“I am eternally grateful. I don’t know how I could have afforded one. Ngyabonga (thank you),” he said.
