New mayor for RNM

Zodwa Mzindle's deployment as the new mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was announced by the ANC KZN Provincial Executive Committee after its recent meeting.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) now boasts a new mayor, Zodwa Mzindle.

Mzindle who is the former RNM speaker of council was sworn in after the 2021 local government elections.
Her deployment as the new mayor was announced by the ANC KZN Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) after its recent meeting.

She was sworn in as the mayor during a RNM council meeting.
In a statement, the ANC said to strengthen service delivery at a local level, the PEC wishes to announce the following deployments: Zodwa Mzindle is the new mayor of RNM, Mbali Cele-Luthuli is the new mayor of Umdoni Municipality, Phila Thabethe is the new deputy mayor for Umdoni Municipality and Mthandeni Mbutho is the new speaker in Umdoni Municipality.

“Our revolutionary congratulations to all comrades. We are confident that they will accelerate service delivery and earn the trust of local communities and serve them with humility, high respect, honestly, commitment and dedication,” read the statement.

Reports suggest that ANC Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional Executive Committee member Thuleleni Khanyase might be the incoming speaker of RNM council.

The position of mayor in RNM became vacant after the former mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi was sworn in as the mayor of Ugu District Municipality.

After Mqadi’s departure, RNM deputy mayor Sibusiso Shange took up the position of acting mayor.
Although the ANC in the province has not confirmed the deployment of an RNM speaker of council; sources close to Fever say ANC Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional Executive Committee member, Thuleleni Khanyase could be sworn in as the new speaker.

However, others say that RNM executive committee member, councillor Phumlani ‘Mapu” Gumbi is also another preferred candidate for the position of speaker.

ANC Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional spokesperson Wendy Mqadi said they can’t confirm whether Khanyase or Gumbi will be appointed as the speaker of RNM.

Mqadi said the information they have is the appointment of Mzindle.

“A meeting will be held by the ANC National Executive Committee and only after that meeting we will know who is the speaker of RNM, but for now we cannot confirm anything,” said Mqadi.

Meanwhile, in her maiden speech, Mzindle said before the end of her 100 days in office, her priorities will include cutting of verges, having clean streets, waste collected as scheduled, working streetlights and robots, and enforcement of by-laws.

“Constant engagements with relevant departments, through portfolio chairs and management of departments will be key to my approach to addressing challenges at hand in this regard,” she said.

Sources say that RNM Exco member who is also a councillor of the ANC, Phumlani ‘Mapu’ Gumbi is another preferred candidate for the position of speaker in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
