Future is bright for Gamalakhe Unity

The club started with 18 players and now boasts 52.

Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre was the battlefield for young footballers who participated in practice matches last Saturday.

These matches were organised by Gamalakhe Unity, a football club established towards the end of last year. The club was formed by, among others, former footballer Phumlani Gumbi, better known as Mapu.

Unity was joined by their neighbours, Citizens FC and FC Bavarians Academy, all the way from Oshabeni.
Mapu said the main objective of these matches is to give a playing platform to the players, keep them together and groom them to be responsible men when they reach that stage.

He said the club started with 18 players and now boasts 52. “We bring them together through sports. We have junior divisions such as under U13, U15 and U17. Our aim is to take them away from destructive things. We also aim to help parents by ensuring their children are far away from bad things,” said Mapu.

On the field, FC Bavarians showed some strength as they won two and drew one of their matches. They defeated Gamalakhe Unity U15 2-1, drew 3-3 with Citizens FC U15 and won 3-2 against Gamalakhe Unity U17.
In other results Unity U15 beat Citizens 4-3.
