Man drowns in Port Edward

The NSRI said lower South Coast link lifeguards had initiated a search and raised the alarm when it is believed a man, aged 25, from the Eastern Cape disappeared underwater while swimming.

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Port Edward duty crew was recently activated after reports of a missing man at Glenmore Lagoon on the Tongazi River, Port Edward last Sunday.

In a statement, the NSRI said the lower South Coast link lifeguards had initiated a search and raised the alarm after it is believed a man, aged 25, from the Eastern Cape disappeared underwater while swimming.

“Our NSRI rescue vehicle and members’ private vehicles responded with rescue swimmers. The SA Police Services, Police Search and Rescue and Police K9 Search and Rescue responded and joined lifeguards and NSRI in the search operation. Police divers, free diving and scuba diving were deployed into the water. During a search police divers located and recovered the body of the man from underwater. Sadly, the man was declared deceased. The body was taken into the care of police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an inquest docket. Condolences are conveyed to the family,” read the statement.
