Swimmers rescued in Port Edward

Gert du Plessis, NSRI Port Edward station commander said Simunye lifeguards had launched into the surf to assist.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Port Edward duty crew was recently activated after reports from Simunye Surf Lifesaving lifeguards of two swimmers in difficulty in the surf line at Silver Beach, Port Edward.

Gert du Plessis, NSRI Port Edward station commander said Simunye lifeguards had launched into the surf to assist.
NSRI Port Edward dispatched its quad bike and rescue vehicle, with rescue swimmers, and launched the rescue craft JetRib.

He added that Med-Evac ambulance services and Saps Search and Rescue also responded.

“On NSRI arriving on the scene, lifeguards had rescued one swimmer, a 20-year-old man who was uninjured. Three lifeguards in the surf line were assisting the second swimmer, a 20-year-old man about 150m to 200m off-shore. Both men are students from Pretoria. Our NSRI JetRib reached them in the breaking surf line and the swimmer and one lifeguard was brought to shore. The swimmer showed signs and symptoms of non-fatal drowning and was taken into the care of Med-Evac paramedics. The JetRib was relaunched and the other two lifeguards were brought to shore,” said du Plessis.

He added that the patient was discharged from the hospital after receiving medical care, and observation for non-fatal drowning symptoms.

The swift response from all involved, and the quick reaction of the lifeguards are commended.
