Ugu clinches second spot in matric exams in KZN

Port Shepstone High School's Mishka Maharaj was the top-performing pupil in Ugu in the 2023 NSC exams.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will host the matric excellence awards for the class of 2023 who did well in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The results were released last week and the Ugu District clinched second spot (89.5%) behind uMkhanyakude District (90%).

The awards will be held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre today (January 24).

Port Shepstone High School’s Mishka Maharaj was the top-performing pupil in Ugu. She was followed by Ziphezinhle Ndlovu, also from Sheppie High and Umzinto Secondary’s Valeska Moodley placed third.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Mbali Frazer applauded the matric class of 2023 for their performance.

She said the province’s 86.4% pass rate is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the learners and education collective, as well as resilience and maturity of the KZN education system.

Frazer said all districts in KZN hosted winter and spring tuition classes across the province which sought to facilitate effective curriculum coverage and revision.

Meanwhile, KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the matric class of 2023 has made everyone proud by clinching second position overall nationally, ahead of Gauteng and Western Cape.
Dube-Ncube said the achievement must be appreciated within the context of the 740 566 candidates that enrolled for the 2023 NSC exams in July 2023.

“The province also recorded 45,7% Bachelor passes with 27,7% Diploma and only 12,9 Higher Certificate passes. I couldn’t be prouder Minister Motshekga. Our province under the steady hand of MEC Mbali Fraser and her top management team has done the job and made all of us delighted to be the citizens of KZN. The fact that every district recorded improvement overall in pass percentage and that four provincial districts are in the top 10 of the country’s district-level performances, is tremendously encouraging and a cause for celebration,” she said.

The premier added that the economy requires creative thinkers and problem solvers in order to grow and produce jobs of the future that will be sustainable.

She said they are repositioning KZN as a smart province, saying that Physical Science and Mathematics will be central.

In conclusion, Dube-Ncube said they were disturbed by a report that stated that KZN led with 80% of group copying cases.

She said this must be corrected. “If we do not correct it, someone might think that the 86.4% that these honest and hardworking learners attainted during the 2023 National Senior Certificate examinations was through cheating. That is not the case. I visited the marking centre at Inanda Seminary on December 6, 2023 and I saw how foolproof and secure our multi-layered marking system was,” she said.
