Sport is vital for youth

At the conference, Umzumbe Mayor Bongani Nyuswa congratulated the team of Umzumbe karatekas who participated in the 13th World Karate Tournament that was recently held in Japan.

Umzumbe Municipality held its seventh Umzumbe Local Sports Development Conference at the Cutty Sark Hotel last weekend.

The conference is a municipal programme that brings together all the wards in Umzumbe, where sports development bodies, government departments and councillors discuss the challenges in sport and the plans to promote it in Umzumbe.

At the conference, Umzumbe Mayor Bongani Nyuswa congratulated the team of Umzumbe karatekas who participated in the 13th World Karate Tournament held recently in Japan.

Nyuswa said these karatekas were part of the South African team, and they put Umzumbe on the map.
The mayor urged attendees to work with the municipality to ensure that sport is developed in Umzumbe.

“Sport is very important in fighting crime, drug use and improving the lives of young people,” said Nyuswa.
Meanwhile, Mthokozisi Mbhele, chairperson of Umzumbe Local Sports Confederation, thanked the municipality and the office responsible for the development of young people for their commitment to the development of sport.

Umzumbe Municipality mayor Bongani Nyuswa hands over a certificate of appreciation to Sithembile Nxumalo of Vodacom.

Mbhele urged Umzumbe council to commit itself to ensuring that decisions taken at these types of conferences are included in the council’s integrated development document IDP.

“The distance travelled by our council in Umzumbe to support the development of sport is great. Yet, I am sure that if we continue this good relationship with our council we will do a lot for sport. I hope that the decisions we take at this conference will find a place in the IDP and in the municipal budget,” said Mbhele.
