Court sentences rapists

Two teenage girls were raped in separate incidents in KwaCele area near Scottburgh and Malangeni in Umzinto.

After facing a charge of rape, Stanley Mgqashiyo was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison at the Scottburgh Regional Court.

Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said Mgqashiyo was sentenced after a 13-year-old girl from the KwaCele area in Scottburgh told her mother that an older man known to the family had raped her.

Francis said the family did not hesitate to report it to the police who arrested Mgqashiyo (57).
He added that the matter proceeded swiftly at court due to concise investigation by Detective Constable Elisa Mbhele of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

Meanwhile, in another case investigated by Mbhele, Francis said a 14-year-old girl was threatened at knifepoint before being raped by a man well-known to her family.

“The incident happened in October and November 2013 in Malangeni, Umzinto. Initial attempts to report the rape were unsuccessful, however this did not deter the investigating officer, Constable Mbhele from getting first-hand reports and interviews from witnesses after the rape was reported to the police,” said Francis.

He added that a foolproof investigation was presented for the court and the accused, 34-year-old Bhekani Mabhiza Chiliza was recently convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
