Police confiscate dagga and firearm

Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said members of Saps Harding were performing crime prevention duties recently when information was received of an illegal firearm.

A 29-year-old man was recently arrested for possession of an unlicenced firearm after failing to produce a licence.

Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said members of Saps Harding were performing crime prevention duties when information was received of an illegal firearm.

Francis said the members proceeded to a residence at Mazakele – Phase 3 where a home was searched and a 9mm pistol was found.

He said in a second, unrelated incident a 26-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of two live rounds of rifle ammunition for which he did not possess a permit.

“Members were performing stop and search operations at a liquor outlet in Murchison Street when the man was arrested. Further investigation will be conducted to locate a possible firearm for the ammunition. Two persons were also fined for selling liquor without a licence during the operation and the alcohol was confiscated. Police took into possession a quantity of dagga which was found abandoned near a police roadblock near Weza,” said Francis, adding police also confiscated a number of knives in the stop and search operations as this often leads to assault and possible murder when persons are under the influence of substances.

Francis added: “An appeal is made by Saps to the public to report all criminal activities and suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111 or My Saps mobile application. You may ask to remain anonymous.”
