Water improvement project underway in Betania

Some of the projects include the upgrading of Bomela pump station and construction of the Nyandezulu elevated reservoir.

Service delivery is evident in Betania as Ugu continues to address water challenges in the community.
Recently the Ugu mayor, Cllr Zero Mqadi visited one of the water improvement projects in the Msikaba area to check on the progress.

Mqadi said that the council is continuing to improve water conditions in rural areas and that the people of Betaina under the tribe of King Ndwalane in the Msikaba area will see development with their own eyes.
Nyandezulu and Betania communities had been faced with intermittent supply due to the capacity of the reservoirs the municipality had constructed in previous years.

The growth in population and the increase in households, as well as developments in Nyandezulu compelled the municipality to devise new business plans and submit them for approval in line with available Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funding resources, to improve supply for these communities.

He said there are many projects funded by MIG. Some of the projects being constructed in Nyandezulu include the upgrading of Bomela pump station, construction of the Nyandezulu elevated reservoir, Msikaba water supply scheme, construction of a 200mmx1000m Klambon steel gravity main from Msikaba Reservoir to Betania and the installation of boreholes at the new development houses, as well as a pipeline that will feed from the elevated reservoir to the new sites and surrounding communities.

Mqadi said according to water engineers, this new technique will help the water system which has been very disrupted. The project is set to take eight to 12 months and will ease the water challenges faced by the Betania residents.

Once this project is complete the residents will enjoy freshwater. These projects create job opportunities as employment is also a huge challenge and will allow small businesses and local entrepreneurs to develop their skills and grow their businesses.

He said he is going to be visiting more projects being constructed by Ugu across the district in due course.
Residents of Betania said they were happy to see service delivery from Ugu and hope that the project is completed in time.

Others said they have had no water for almost a year and have to depend on water tankers that sometimes do not reach all the areas. They said they could not wait for the project to be completed.
