Hospital leads stroke awareness initiative

Dr Bavani Naicker said stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, and raising awareness is pivotal to reducing its impact.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department recently embarked on an initiative to raise awareness about stroke.

As October is recognised as Stroke Awareness Month, Dr Bavani Naicker, the Clinical Head of the Emergency Department and Dr Boitumelo Kubeka organised an initiative to enhance stroke care for patients and to better equip the hospital staff in managing the healthcare issue.

Dr Naicker said stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, and raising awareness is pivotal to reducing its impact.

The hospital’s public relations officer, Phumza Morai said the initiative focused on education, saying that patients visiting the hospital received valuable information on stroke awareness, prevention and recognition.

They were empowered with the knowledge they needed to respond swiftly in the event of a stroke. Dr Kubeka alongside with the planning team members actively engaged with the patients, sharing insights and resources about stroke prevention and recognition.

Hospital staff, including medical professionals, the management and support staff, participated in an educational symposium which delved into the realities of stroke, the necessary resources, and the knowledge required to effectively care for stroke patients in a hospital setting.

The initiative included interactive discussions on how the staff can improve their understanding of stroke symptoms, risk factors and the latest treatment protocols.
Stroke Awareness Month serves as a reminder that knowledge and awareness are crucial in the fight against stroke.
