Missing woman found dead

Mthwalume residents are demanding a police special unit that will investigate missing person cases and cases of murder.

A woman with strangulation marks was found dead in the bushes of Mthwalume on Monday last week.

The body of twenty-year-old Banelile Mkhize of Mabheleni in Msinsini was found in the Nyavini area.
Police were looking for her as she had gone missing on September 30.

KZN police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said a case of murder has been opened for investigation by Saps Msinsini.

She said Mkhize was found in bushes in Nyavini area by police and community members on October 9.

“Her body had strangulation marks. She was identified at the scene by family members. No arrest has been made as yet. Police are searching for the perpetrator,” said Gwala.

Meanwhile, non-profit organisation – Women of Mthwalume protested against the lack of police visibility in the area on Friday.

The organisation’s Nombuso Sibisi said they handed over a memorandum to the office of Ugu Saps cluster commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele, demanding a special unit that will investigate missing person cases in Mthwalume that later turn to murder cases.

“We have given them seven days to give us a Saps special unit. Otherwise, we will be asking the police minister to remove all police officers in Hibberdene because most of them are from the Mthwalume area, they do not do their jobs properly and others are said to be friends with the alleged perpetrators,” said Sibisi.

She added that they have a list of people missing since 2020 and has not heard anything from the police about them.

“We want the Saps to reopen the cases of Sizakele Myende who went missing in 2020, Lungelo Myende who disappeared in 2021, Snethemba Shibe who was last seen in 2022, and Simphiwe Nzama who disappeared in 2023. We are giving them seven days to bring a special unit who will investigate,” she said.
