Man (26) in custody for firearm

Saps members were conducting patrols in the Harding CBD last Friday when the spotted the man behaving suspiciously.

The Saps Harding Task team members recently arrested a man for being in possession of a firearm, 14 rounds of ammunition and a knife.

Port Shepstone police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said Saps members were conducting patrols in the Harding CBD last Friday, when the spotted the man behaving suspiciously.

“They stopped and searched him and found a black Taurus pistol, 14 rounds of live ammunition and a knife in his possession. The 26-year-old man had been sought for possession of stolen property and was arrested. He will appear in the Harding Magistrate’s Court on October 4 on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition,” said Mpinge, adding that other charges may be added.

He said the man remains in police custody.

Station commander of Saps Harding, Lieutenant Colonel Bhekuyise Khanyile said he was pleased with the arrest and recovery of the firearm, emphasising the importance of removing guns off the street.
Khanyile urged communities to report illegal weapons to the police.
