Honouring a jazz enthusiast

The tribute to Bona Nzimande will be held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre this Saturday.

The Khosathu House Jazz Club says it does not have an appetite for money.
The club’s chairperson, Mondli Ngcobo said this after the club launched a jazz event to honour the late Bona Nzimande who was a jazz fanatic.

The tribute to Nzimande will be held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre this Saturday, September 23.
Ngcobo described Nzimande as a well-respected figure who excelled in everything he touched.

“He was an educator, a community developer, organiser, a businessman, and an entertainer. His love for jazz music inspired many people to follow in his footsteps. He brought some of the big names in the jazz industry to the South Coast such as guitarist Sipho Gumede, Babsy Mlangeni, Stompie Mavi, and Joe Nina working together with Victor Khusi,” said Ngcobo.

He added that it was because of Nzimande’s love for jazz music that the club decided to honour him.
Ngcobo said before coming up with the idea of the tribute, they saw a need to form a local jazz club.

He said: “Our club has a constitution, we will soon register it as a non-profit organisation. We do not have an appetite for money as a club. We have a vision to build an academy where we teach young people everything about jazz music, instruments such as drums, and so on. We hope one day to have a clubhouse where weekdays are for the academy and weekends are for hosting music sessions at the clubhouse.”

Nzimande’s wife, Tholi said as the family they are grateful that Bona was being recognised.
She described her late husband as a socialite who was full of love.
She said he loved the spotlight and showing off.

“I have always thought that Nzimande deserved some sort of tribute. I fell in love with jazz music through my husband. I have never attended any jazz events but he loved it so much that his children ended up loving it as much as he did. It is good to know that my husband planted something in people’s hearts through what he loved most,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ngcobo said the tribute will be a laid-back music session that will feature jazz artists such as Mack Ngcobo, Ken Mavundla, Bra Malusi, DJ Sgede, Bra Madondo, Msheddys, Banele Mpisane, and Vusi Sidunda.
He added that he tribute will start at 12pm.
