‘Maidens must adhere to Zulu culture’

A total of 1 500 maidens were hosted during the Siyaya Emhlangeni programme which was organised by Umuziwabantu Municipality in partnership with the KZN Provincial Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture.

Zulu maidens should refrain from sexual activities until they are married.
This was the advice given to maidens by Ndlunkulu Zola KaMafu kaZwelithini (the wife of the late Zulu monarch – King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu) at the Siyaya Emhlangeni Moral Regeneration Programme held at KwaMbotho, under Umuziwabantu Municipality.

KaMafu said maidens need to restore their dignity as young women, adhere to the Zulu culture, and display conduct that is expected of traditional women.

Siyaya Emhlangeni meaning ‘we are going to the reed dance’, is an event that forms part of the build-up activities towards the hosting of the 2023 Umkhosi WoMhlanga (reed dance).

The programmes which are taking place throughout the province are aimed at preparing maidens and their guides for the provincial traditional reed dance that is usually held at eNyokeni in kwaNongoma.
The mayor of Umuziwabantu Siboniso Zungu said he appreciated the community for always adhering to the government’s call to honour the programme, saying that he appreciated the work done by all stakeholders to make the Siyaya Emhlangeni Mayoral Regeneration programme a success.

He added that the programme assists in HIV/Aids prevention and other sexually transmitted diseases.
