Amakhosi receive Brahman bulls from MEC

Zuma also donated a wire fence to Inkosi Ngcobo which is 15 kilometers long, Inkosi Nzimakwe received 17 km, while Inkosi Ndwalane received 15 km.

The KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s MEC, Super Zuma handed over six Brahman bulls to Inkosi Bhekizizwe Nzimakwe, Inkosi Mbuso Ngcobo, and Inkosi Sazi Ndwalane during a communal herd genetic improvement programme in Betania on Tuesday last week.

Zuma also donated a 15km wire fence to Inkosi Ngcobo, Inkosi Nzimakwe received 17km, while Inkosi Ndwalane received 15km.

The MEC also handed over fertilisers, seedlings, tractors, machinery for ploughing, and discing tools.
Zuma said they were leaving the donations with amakhosi so that they could find a system with their communities to use the donated resources handed to them.

“A first we used to give Bonsmara bulls but traditional leaders from the Ugu District said they want Brahman which will change the way livestock farming is done here. If you come here after two you will see how cattle in this area have changed. Farming must go hand in glove with domestication. Fencing a livestock grazing camp ensure that the livestock herds are in a good health state and ready for auctions and the ever-demanding market,” he said, adding that through these programmes they intend to bridge the gap between commercial farmers and emerging livestock farmers while also increasing red meat production in the province.

He said it is important for farmers to ensure that their livestock is always in good health so that they can make a good profit from it and make it easier for the livestock to be sold.

Zuma said he encourages the public not to undermine agriculture because there is widespread food insecurity, adding that farming impacts everyone’s lives.

During his visit to Betania, MEC Zuma addressed residents. He was accompanied by the mayor if Ugu District Municipality, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, the speaker of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council Zodwa Mzindle as well as amakhosi.
