ANC suspends Umzumbe speaker

ANC KZN secretary, Bheki Mtolo announced Maphumulo's suspension during a press briefing on Tuesday last week, after a two-day Provincial Executive Committee meeting.

Will a by-election take place in Ward 11 under Umzumbe Municipality?

The ANC in KZN announced on Tuesday last week that it has summarily suspended the membership of Sbonelo Maphumulo who is not only the Ward 11 councillor but also the speaker of Umzumbe council.

ANC KZN secretary, Bheki Mtolo announced Maphumulo’s suspension during a press briefing after a two-day Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting.

Mtolo said on the matters of discipline, the ANC’s PEC received a report on the speaker of council of Umzumbe Municipality, who is alleged to have gone against the mandate of the ANC several times in council.

Just over a week ago, a number of ANC branches in the Umzumbe Municipality marched to the ANC provincial offices in Durban in protest against Maphumulo.
Mtolo said Maphumulo’s actions almost rendered the ANC caucus useless.

“It should be recalled that ANC structures marched to the ANC provincial offices against his conduct. The PEC has resolved to summarily suspend his membership in the ANC and subject him to the disciplinary purposes of the ANC. He is not allowed to engage in ANC programmes or political activities. These are part of the conditions that will be part of his suspension. He will not be allowed to attend any ANC meetings, caucuses, and the council of Umzumbe as an ANC representative while his membership has been suspended,” said Mtolo.

Speaking to Fever, Maphumulo said it was the first time he was hearing of his suspension.

“I had no idea. No one has told me anything about being suspended. I can’t comment any further until I have been informed about this,” said Maphumulo
