Avoid hitchhiking

Police are urging the public to avoid hitchhiking after a 36-year-old woman was robbed in Tweni after taking a lift recently.

Port Shepstone police urges the public to avoid hitchhiking, if at all possible.
According to police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge it is alleged that recently, a 36-year-old woman was waiting for a lift at the Umtentweni traffic lights when a white car with two men stopped next to her.
Mpinge said one of the men pointed a firearm at her and instructed her to get inside the vehicle.

“He robbed her of cash and a cellphone. She was dropped off in Hibberdene where she reported the robbery.

Police have opened a case of armed robbery for investigation. Police wish to once again warn the public to be aware of their safety when travelling. Persons who hitchhike increase their vulnerability to crime and harm. Travel in a group if possible and with a pre-arranged lift club or taxi known to you. Stand with other people when waiting for a taxi on the road,” said Mpinge, adding that make transport arrangements if you have to work extended hours.

He said arrange for a family member to wait for you at your stop and accompany you home.

“Avoid hitchhiking if at all possible. If you do, do not accept a lift with a car full of men. Enquire first as to where the vehicle is headed and travel in a pair. Make a note of the number plate and if possible WhatsApp a friend with the details as a precaution. Be crime-conscious – be aware of the risk of crime at all times. Never walk around alone and do not talk to strangers. Be on the lookout for strange cars or people. Walk in well-lit, busy streets and in a group, if possible. Make sure your home is secure, and join an armed response service. Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers, or have them where you can easily find them,” said Mpinge.

He added that people need to always let someone know where they are going and how long they will be away.
“Think twice before advertising your absence and plans on social media – remember criminals also have access to Facebook and Twitter. Know all the emergency numbers. Trust your instinct. Avoid going onto a very busy, blocked street where you cannot even walk properly, as that is where you will find criminals pickpocketing. Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them,” said Mpinge.
