New stalls for hawkers at St Mike’s

The stalls were developed by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality with funding assistance from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality recently handed over new market stalls to informal traders at St Michael’s Beach.
Municipal manager Khetha Zulu said it had pained him for years to see hawkers move from one corner of the beach to the other with their trollies.

Zulu said the stalls were developed by the municipality with funding assistance from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

“I am happy that we can now look at this facility and take pride in the service that we have provided. These hawkers can now work in a proper facility,” said Zulu.

At the handover, Zulu was accompanied by speaker of council Zodwa Mzindle, Ward 19 councillor George Henderson and chief whip Teddy Hlophe.

One of the informal traders, Sonto Ngcobo said they are happy that the municipality has finally built the stalls for them.

“Over the years, we had to brave the heat and try to sell our products in the rain. So today is a great day and we are extremely grateful for this,” said Ngcobo.
