Ugu’s Sukumasakhe celebrates Mandela Day

Forming part of the commemoration, a sustainable Education First Literacy Centre in KwaNzimakwe near Port Edward was also launched.

As part of Nelson Mandela Day celebrations, Ugu District Operation Sukumasakhe embarked on a clean-up campaign at Amandawe taxi rank in Scottburgh (under Umdoni Municipality).

A sustainable Education First Literacy Centre in KwaNzimakwe near Port Edward was also launched as part of the commemoration.

Khanyiso Seyisi, who is the Government Communication and Information System Ugu District regional communication coordinator, said that Glen Xaba (the KZN Head of Department champion for Ugu District Operation Sukumasakhe) officiated with the district and local mayors during the programme.

This began at Amandawe taxi rank, with cleaning, information leaflets shared and minor speeches.
Seyisi said all government leaders, officials, social partners, media, and other community structures rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty to clean the taxi rank as part of their 67 Minutes For Mandela Day.

“Key among the process was also sharing of information on why Nelson Mandela Day matters to the communities and how it should be observed and sustained. The government shared information on waste management, maritime environment, and shark protection and distributed information on climate change,” said Seyisi.
He said that later on in the day, the whole delegation proceeded to the initiation of the Education First Literacy Centre at KwaNzimakwe near Port Edward (under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality).

“This centre was the brainchild of Ntombi Mkhize, who approached government to seek some help after seeing the plight of young children lacking study resources and who read without meaning,” he said.
Activities done on the day were gardening services, vegetable planting, government-donated equipment, books, computers, stationery, water tanker (Jojo), painting, and playing equipment.

The short programme included a list of speakers who shared messages and information regarding the legacy of Nelson Mandela and how to preserve his legacy in order to make the lives of the citizens better.
