RNM buys graders, trucks worth R15 million

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality bought two tipper trucks and two graders worth R15 million.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Council has welcomed the purchase of two tipper trucks and two graders worth R15 million.
The municipal spokesperson, Simon April said the resolution to buy yellow plant equipment was taken in February 2022 during the Strategic Planning Session.

April said there were some delays as National Treasury had indicated that RNM can only be part of the transversal tender in April 2023.

“With this purchase, RNM aims at investing in the maintenance of its road infrastructure in a reliable and effective manner, and the plan is to purchase more such equipment to achieve this objective. This brings hope in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality especially to those living in rural areas, their roads will be better maintained. This hope is brought by the fact that RNM has delivered on its commitment to have reliable tools to maintain its road infrastructure through outright purchase of equipment,” said April.

Some of the councillors said they hope that the equipment will be well maintained so that they can last RNM for years, while some councillors suggested that there should be trip sheets and reporting devices for the drivers using the tipper trucks and graders.

The equipment was officially handed over by the then mayor of RNM, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi.

In a statement on Tuesday last week, RNM spokesperson, Simon April said RNM council accepted Mqadi’s resignation as the mayor, as the ANC PR
Councillor, and as the RNM representative to Ugu District Municipal Council.

“In the letter he wrote to the Speaker of Council, Mqadi indicated that his resignation in all the positions he held at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was effective from June 26. He also thanked everyone for the support he got since being elected as the mayor of RNM and through his mission to better the lives of the people of Ray Nkonyeni,” read the statement, adding that as RNM, they would like to express their gratitude to Mqadi for the sterling job and his love for the people since being elected as the mayor in January 2022.

April added: “We can confidently confirm that Jakaja, as he was referred to, is passionate about working for communities, and that he worked with everyone to ensure a better life for all people. We are hoping to see him continuing with the sterling job wherever you will be deployed by your party as we strongly believe that you still have a great role to play in changing the lives of our people for the better. We thank you Jakaja mfowethu (our brother).”

Meanwhile, April said they can confirm that the deputy mayor, Godfrey Sibusiso Shange will do all mayoral responsibilities until a new mayor has been sworn in.
