Good convictions for Scottburgh detectives

The officers are Detective Warrant Officer Njabulo Latha and Detective Sergeant Thamsanqa Shozi.

Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, said Scottburgh detectives recently secured good convictions.

Mpinge said two robbers who preyed on vulnerable people such as the aged and women, were recently sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court to 15 years imprisonment each for robbery in separate cases.

“On December 3, 2021, an 81-year-old woman was relaxing in her home in Second Street, Park Rynie, when two unknown men entered the home brandishing a knife and a firearm. They threatened the woman and when her nephew appeared, one of the men stabbed him in the hand. They also threatened his father. A security company was alerted, one of the suspects was arrested on the scene and handed over to police. He was then charged for robbery with aggravating circumstances and remained in police custody throughout his trial,” said Mpinge.

He added that Sbonelo Maphumulo (26) was convicted on May 18, 2023 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment of which five years is suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offence during this period.

Mpinge said the investigating officer was Detective Warrant Officer Njabulo Latha.

He added, in another case that occurred on January 24, a woman was hitchhiking on the N2 near the Sezela Bridge when an unknown man stopped to give her a lift.

“He then produced a knife and robbed her of her cellphone. Just then a policeman was driving to work and the woman flagged him down, reporting what had happened and giving a precise description of the vehicle. The policeman drove after the suspect and found the suspect’s vehicle stationary on the N2 offering another unsuspecting woman a lift. He was promptly arrested. After a few court appearances, the accused, Enost Vusi Majoka (46) was convicted on May 11 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment of which five years is suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of robbery during the period of suspension,” said Mpinge, adding that the the investigating officer was Detective Sergeant Thamsanqa Shozi .
