‘Be safe during loadshedding’

Try to be home at night before the late loadshedding schedule is implemented when gates and garage doors need to be manually operated.

Port Shepstone police are urging the public to be extra vigilant during periods of load shedding, especially at night.

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said, people need to make sure that all doors and windows are properly locked, and limit the need to go outside during this time.

He added that it is advisable to install at least one outside solar light to enable them to see outside.

“If you hear an unfamiliar noise, do not go outside to investigate. Contact a neighbour, flush the toilet, or put on a rechargeable light to let the intruder know you are awake and aware. Contact your security company if you have one. Keep your phone charged. Make sure all heaters, stoves, and cooking appliances are off and unplugged if possible. Remove or trim large bushes and hedges in the front of your property as well as adjacent to your home to prevent criminals from hiding there and watching your daily movements. Remove unused or old metal and objects from your property that may draw criminals to your home in search of scrap metal. Try to be home at night before the late loadshedding schedule is implemented when gates and garage doors need to be manually operated,” said Mpinge, adding that be careful at traffic lights and reduce speed when driving as visibility is poor.
