Speaking to Fever, Ward 28 councillor, Bekithemba Zulu described Sandile Innocent Khwela as a people's person.

The death of Sandile Innocent Khwela has sent shockwaves throughout Gamalakhe township.

Khwela who was the Treasurer of the David Sobhoyisa Branch in Ward 28, Gamalakhe was gunned down on Saturday night by unknown suspects.

Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, said a murder case has been opened for investigation at SAPS Gamalakhe after a 45-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds on March 25 after dropping off two persons at Popo Village in Gamalakhe.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown,” said Mpinge.

Speaking to Fever, Ward 28 councillor, Bekithemba Zulu described Khwela as a people’s person.

“It is very hard digesting the death of Khwela. He was a people’s person. He was very helpful in everything that one needed. We have been really hard hit, especially me. I am a ward councillor but the way he assisted me in my ward, that is what I will mostly miss about him,” said Zulu.

Meanwhile, Lindokuhle Hadebe of Gamalakhe said the passing of Khwela is not only a loss to the ANC in Ward 28 but the entire community.

“We pass our condolences to family and friends of Sandile Khwela. We call on the South African Police Service to enforce the law within the area of Gamalakhe which has become prone to serious crimes such as murder. It is important that the police conduct routine patrols when there is load shedding at night to keep our community safe. May his soul rest in peace,” said Hadebe.
