Track Torque: Impeccable Perez in Saudi Arabia

Let us wait and see if Ferrari can do a lot better before we criticise the team for a bad 2023 car.

This time was Sergio Perez’s turn in Red Bull’s 1-2. Perez drove an impeccable race in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
Second to Perez was team mate and world champion Max Verstappen who had a good, but not complete, race in his terms as he hoped to win.
Verstappen complained to Red Bull that in the end his car was just not quick enough.

Fernando Alonso had another terrific weekend and chalked up his 100th podium position.
He was lucky on review to get his third position back from the stewards which would have put him fourth and George Russell third. In the end Russell was given fourth position.

It was a pretty good comeback from Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton fifth in the sister car in a straight fight with Ferrari, the black Mercs beat the red cars from Maranello on this occasion.

This time it was Carlos Sainz who led his team Charles Leclerc home by eight seconds. It was also a good result for Kevin Magnussen who made it home in 10th position.

So far, with two races gone this season, the two McLarens (Logan Sargeant and Lando Norris) just do not have the pace, while the other Mercedes users, Aston Martin and Williams have made better use of their power units.
No one expected Fernando Alonso to come back so well, with the 42 year old world champion from 2006 and 2007 – some 16 years back – showing the youngsters half his age how to drive.

In two weeks’ time we move down under to Melbourne, Australia which is a much better judge of true form at a good, old-fashioned circuit.
Let us wait and see if Ferrari can do a lot better before we criticise the team for a bad 2023 car.
