Anyone who may have witnessed the assault is requested to urgently contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Lami Mjweni on 039 688 1065 or 082 715 4993 at Port Shepstone Detective Service.

A number of people recently took to social media to express their anger and disappointment after the death of Sah Luthuli.

According to Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, a case of murder has been opened after a 33-year-old man was found dead along Marine Drive in Shelly Beach on Wednesday, February 15.

Mpinge said it is alleged that he was waiting for transport to Gamalakhe when several men got out of a taxi and severely assaulted him. Some of Luthuli’s friends have alleged that the men who assaulted him are part of the forum that was recently established to curb crime at the taxi ranks of Port Shepstone, Shelly Beach and Margate.

One of Luthuli’s friends who did not want to be named alleged a number of people saw the people who jumped off the taxi and attacked but no one will be arrested.

“It is unfair that the people who are supposedly volunteering to curb crime are the ones we need protection from,” he said.
One of Luthuli’s brothers confirmed to Fever that he died in Shelly Beach but refused to comment any further.

Attempts to get hold of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Ugu region which established the forum had not been successful at the time of going to press.

Meanwhile Captain Mpinge said anyone who may have witnessed the assault is requested to urgently contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Lami Mjweni on 039 688 1065 or 082 715 4993 at Port Shepstone Detective Service.
