Police arrest two men for illegal firearms in Izingolweni

The operations were conducted in the Thonjeni area in kwaNyuswa, Ezinqoleni.

The recent search operations by members of the District Operational Command centre led by Colonel Dalton Lukhozi yielded good results, said Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge.

He said during the operations, a shotgun and six live rounds of ammunition were recovered.

He added that the search operation was an attempt to curb the proliferation of firearms in the Ugu District.

“A 43-year-old man seated in a VW Polo was searched as well as his vehicle resulting in the recovery of a shotgun and six live rounds of ammunition. He was arrested. The residence of a 74-year-old man was also searched and police discovered at least 52 rounds of high caliber ammunition, 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition and 45 rounds for an automatic firearm. The pensioner was also arrested for possession of a firearm, negligent handling of a firearm and possession of unlicensed ammunition,” said Mpinge, adding that the two recently appeared in the Ezinqoleni Magistrate’s Court.

He added that the matter was remanded for further investigation.
Mpinge said Ugu District Vispol Commander Brigadier Anton Kapp, is pleased with the recovery and arrests and is determined to increase the pressure on persons in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, which is the main culprit in serious and violent crime in the district.
