Two arrested in police undercover operations

The suspects were arrested for drug dealing and illegal possession of cycads.

Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation working together with Crime Intelligence arrested a 32-year-old suspect for dealing in drugs in the Margate area last Friday.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Simpiwe Mhlongo said the members received information about drug dealing activities in the area and an undercover operation was held.

“The suspect was found in possession of pure oil based crystal meth to the street value of approximately R30 000. He was subsequently arrested and charged with dealing in drugs, and is expected to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court soon.

Meanwhile in Ezinqoleni, KwaNyuswa the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation assisted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment arrested a 28-year-old suspect for dealing in cycad plants, also on Friday.
Mhlongo said in this incident, police received information that the man was advertising cycad plants for sale on Facebook.

“The suspect indicated that he was not in possession of a permit, the police conducted an undercover operation, recovering five cycad plants.

“A further search was conducted at his residence and two large Encephalartos ghellinckii cycads and 39 small Encephalartos natalensis cycads were seized,” Mhlongo added.

He said the suspect was arrested and charged with illegal dealing in cycad plants. He is also expected to appear in the Ezingolweni Magistrate’s Court.
